Zhasmina Zhivkova Internship

The University of Sunderland in London offers a small number of internships to graduating students. In this interview, we hear from one of our recent interns, Zhasmina Zhivkova.

Marketing and Engagement Project Assistant (Intern) – Wellbeing Team (September 2024 – May 2025)

Please tell us about yourself and what you studied at the university

I am originally from Varna near the Black Sea in Bulgaria and graduated in 2023 with a BA (Hons) Events and Entertainment Management. The studying experience at UoSiL taught me to learn by example and really developed my critical thinking skills.

What was the internship you completed with the university?

For 9 months, I worked as a Marketing and Engagement Project Assistant (Intern) for the Student Wellbeing Team.

I supported and delivered multiple activities. This included: the roll-out of Spectrum.Life and the university’s housing support service, and creating marketing materials to promote key events such as University Mental Health Day.

I was also given the freedom to develop and deliver my own activities, including a ‘healthier relationships for Valentine’s Day’ event, which students really enjoyed!

What motivated you to apply for the internship?

I love learning new things and gaining new skills – so thought I’d try the internship. The role offered me the chance to develop my creativity and design. And to learn more about wellbeing – personally and professionally.

What skills and experience did you gain through the internship?

I developed my events planning, research, and delivery skills – enhancing what I learnt in my degree. I also improved my digital skills, including Microsoft certification, business writing skills, spoken English, and communication skills.

In addition, the internship gave me the chance to build professional relationships with staff and students across the university. After all, you need a team to get things done!

Why should other graduates apply for an internship at UoSiL?

Every experience is valuable. Internships give you the best start for your career, so you stand out in the competitive job market.

I encourage students to keep an eye out for such opportunities in their email, so they don’t miss out.

Tell me about the highlights of your internship, including the recent Bulgarian Cultural event.

Bulgarian folklore is my passion and wanted to celebrate my culture as part of my internship - with singing, dance, and food. Cultural events bring people together and seeing staff and students, Bulgarian and non-Bulgarians alike, enjoying the event was great.

Zhasmina is part of Orisiya Ethno Group – featuring Zhasmina, Kalina Radeva, Ana-Maria Yanakieva and Velislava Delova - a female vocal group of four who perform traditional Bulgarian folklore songs. Based in London, the group performs among the Bulgarian community and at Bulgarian schools and dance groups.
